Monroe County is often called the Switzerland of Ohio. It was settled around 1800 by a group of Swiss immigrants who were flat boating down the Ohio River to a new home further west. They made land in Monroe County one night and fell in love with an area that reminded them of Switzerland. People have been falling in love with Monroe County ever since.
 
Wayne National Forest: 740-373-9055
The Wayne National Forest is located in southeastern Ohio in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is comprised of 178,000 acres. There are seven developed campgrounds and over 25,000 acres of Monroe County land concentrated mostly in the southern section of the county is part of Wayne National Forest. Beautiful streams and lakes and opportunities everywhere for hunting, fishing, camping and hiking.
 
 
Monroe Park & Marina (formerly Hannibal Locks & Dam)
State Route 7, Hannibal, Ohio
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed this modem navigational dam on the Ohio River. There are public restrooms and picnic shelters available here, as well as historical and informational displays. Click here for more details.
Shelter house areas are available on a first-come, first-serve basis or by reservation. Call 740-472-1328 for reservations. Now this area is used as boat access and fishing area (open year round).
